Choosing The Right Dingy Davits For Your Boat

One of the pleasures of cruising is dropping anchor out at your favorite gunk hole and launching the dingy and taking in the sights of the area or visiting other yachts; it’s a great way to meet new friends. But if your tender is not very accessible or hard to launch, you will not likely use it often.

All tenders require adequate storage. Towing is not always practical and can be dangerous in bad conditions. The same goes for on deck storage; a big wind and you may lose it. But if properly setup your boat with the appropriate davit system, your dingy will offer trouble-free service.

Notwithstanding before you select your davit system, you’ll need to select the right dingy for your boating needs. Do you favor a rigid tender or inflatable? Remember punctures are very common with inflatables? Where will it be used? On the high seas or inland waters? How big do you need her?

There are 4 basic davit arrangements available to store a dinghy:

ing position for storage. Weaver Davits are limited by the weight of the dingy. I have the davit system on our trawler and I could not be more satisfied. We can launch and retrieve the tender in less than 10 minutes.

Stanchion mounts are secured to the rails, deck or transom. Fashioned for heavy dinghy-engine setups, these davit systems come with universal riser arms for a custom fit to your boat. Big dingies may need optional support kits mounted on the transom or swim platform. When properly installed, the tender lies horizontal from the stern of the boat. On these installations, the dingy outboard can remain in place. On a negative side, the tender setup requires a fair amount of manual labor to hoist the tender using 2 block and tackles. These are common setups on sailboats.

Rotating davits raise, rotate and position the dingy onto the foredeck or sundeck. If the deck can support the load, these systems can be directly mounted, or the supporting post may be placed on a lower deck. Most setups are supplied with an electric winch to mechanically lower and raise the tender. Dingies with large motors (15 horsepower or more) often combine a rotating davit on the transom with a cradle for the dingy mounted on deck. The setups allow lifting for the heaviest of dingy/motor arrangements. On a negative side, these arrangements may place the operator at heights that could be risky in rough waters. In addition, care must be made to keep the outboard from striking the mother ship as the dingy is raised or lowered, breaking windows or damaging the gel coat.

Hydraulic – powered lifts have become common on large yachts to lift heavy dingies or personal water craft. Most are complex and not easily owner installed. Costs for these davit systems increase as the lifting load increases– the bigger the dinghy, the pricier the davit system. To use, the lifts are lowered into the water and the dingy is driven onto the cradle. A negative feature is that these units may not work well in a following sea.

In most examples when buying a used yacht, the tender and davit system is already in place. You will just need to acquaint yourself with it to see if you like it. If you do not, there are other choices for you.

I want to give you a good idea of why used boats cost as much as they do so let’s start from the top.

On other pages on my website, you will read about the absence of a Yacht Blue Book. Yes, that’s right, there is no such thing. There is one for automobiles but not for boats. If you call any used car dealer or bank in North America and name any production automobile, they will quote a value of within a few dollars of each other. This is due to the multi-billion dollar, organized wholesale car auction system.

With over 2,200 boat manufacturers (USCG Listings) in North America there is no such wholesale market for boats and the older a boat gets the bigger the price discrepancies. And keep in mind that boats and yachts are not built on an assembly line. I’ve been through my share of boat building plants including Hatteras, Bertram and Carver. Boats are built like houses, one step at a time. Very labor intensive, boats are built, cars are assembled. So you can easily see why new boats cost thousands, perhaps millions of dollars to produce. Powerboats cost more to produce than sailboats as they are more complex.

Generally speaking boats do not appreciate in value. But they do reach a point in their life where they do not loose any more value. Much like antique automobiles, the rarer a boat is, the more it will be in demand. A 40 year old Huckins will often bring more money today than when it was first commissioned. But boats generally depreciate about 10% a year.

So you are looking at that 1984 40 foot Albin trawler, with a single Lehman and 2 staterooms. What is it worth? What is a fair price? Simply speaking, that Albin is only worth what you are willing to give and the seller is willing to take. So where do you start?

t you need to know when considering prices of boats. The owner has established his asking price with consultation with his listing Broker based upon several factors. I do the same with my sellers.

In what condition is the boat? Good boats always command higher prices, always! A newer boat in poor condition will bring less than an older boat in good condition always!. By condition I am speaking of both cosmetics (cleanliness, gelcoat, paint, woodwork, canvas) and structural issues involving fuel tanks, rudder posts, blisters etc. The more upgrades and maintenance that has been completed, the more you should expect to pay as the owner knows this. He also knows that you will have already looked at the worn out boats and have rejected them too.

How old is the boat? See above. This factored in but is not the deciding factor.

How motivated is the seller? Some owners want to move their boat as quickly as possible and any thing close to an asking price might be acceptable. This doesn’t happen often but it does occur.

How many of these 40′ Albins are there on the market? Remember, the more demand for the boat, the higher the price will usually be. And I find that most people will not travel far to buy a boat, so boats in California will not be in competition with East Coast boats.

And lastly, and perhaps the most important factor in determining that asking price will be recent past sales history of similar makes and models. The recent past sales history is available only to Brokers however through our multiple listing service, YachtWorld. It will give me the recent demand for this 40′ Albin and at what selling prices have been in different parts of the USA. It tells me what people are asking and what people are paying!

So when you are looking at this Albin and you have found at what seems to be a great boat for $50,000.00 and all of the others are in the $85 – $100,000.00 range, there is a reason for this. Remember, condition, condition, condition! Be carefull as new fuel tanks will cost you about $30,000.00 to replace, and rudder posts about $8000.00. But if you can live with the problems with the boat, then by all means buy it. I am just wanting you to know not to expect a problem – free boat for the low, low price; you’ll pay for what you get.

So now you are thinking, are all boat prices negotiable? Certainly they are. Everything has its selling price and neither the listing Broker nor the owner may know what that price will be. Only a serious buyer with money on the table will be able to find that out through negotiations. but I will tell you that as of 11/24/2008, boats are selling at about 15% off of asking prices.

Another factor that comes to mind is that powerboats always sale for more than sailboats. I ran this search on the MLS system and found that a 1985 40′ sailboat will have an asking price in the low $100s, however a 1985 trawler or motoryacht will be in the $130 – $140s. Sailors sometimes get sticker shock when they began to search for powerboats.

But if you spend a bit of time on your preparation, pricing and paperwork you can ensure you get the Blue Book Value. Boats can be offered at some fantastic prices these days as the owners just simply slap a price on the windshield and damn the consequences.

By selling smartly you can easily increase the amount you can put down on your new purchase.

Like most things in life, you need to plan the process (yes I know boring huh?). But do this and you’ll not only get the very best price, but you’ll minimize the effort and time involved as well.

Make sure you cover these four important areas and you will be laughing all the way to the boat shop:

* setting a price
* deciding on how to sell it
* boat preparation
* doing the deal and paperwork

Price Setting

The main mistake made by boat sellers is pricing the boat either too low or too high. Too low and people will think there is something seriously wrong with it or an unscrupulous dealer will snap your hand off and make a hefty profit. Price it too high and you can’t get rid of it.

What you need to do:

You have three basic choices: sell it yourself, trade it in, or sell it through a broker:

You have choices of which Blue Book value boats make by the method of selling, it is usually influenced by the size and value of your boat. If your boat is small it is unlikely a broker would want to get involved as there is no profit for them, if it is large it will probably involve complex paperwork and negotiations so you may want to pass it to a broker.

Selling the boat yourself should make you the most money, but you have to do all the work. Decide your budget and plan your advertising campaign. Classified ads in a local newspaper are an obvious choice, but you could look at magazines, especially for bigger boats. Internet sites attract buyers across the country and worldwide. Trading in your boat is easy when you’re buying a new boat, but most dealers won’t take trades on used boats. Unless you are a master haggler you are unlikely to get anywhere near the blue book value.

Incidentally, the best time to sell your boat is the beginning of the boating season when buyers are most interested. If you try to sell off-season you will have difficulty getting the best price. The same is true for trade-ins, because the dealer can’t turn the boat over as quickly off-season.

Brokers

A yacht broker is like a real estate agent, they advertise and showcase your boat to potential clients. They also handle the legal paperwork, and take a percentage of the selling price as a commission, usually between 5 to 10 percent. Use brokers who specialize in boats similar to yours, since they are likely to have more serious buyers.

Usually a buyer of your boat will pay for a marine survey, (an inspection to determine the condition of the boat) this can be used to negotiate the price downwards to compensate for any problems that are discovered. Try to second guess the survey by getting problems fixed before advertising, it will be much cheaper.

Boat Preparation

The golden rule is ‘a clean and tidy boat always earns a higher selling price’. You will have to invest some time and elbow grease but it will be worth it.

Scrub the entire boat and deck with mild detergent and a soft brush. To make the fiberglass shine have it buffed with rubbing compound and polished with wax, on small boats, you can do this yourself using an automotive buffing wheel. Make sure your varnish is in good condition or give it one coat, if the teak is gray, bleach it or oil it, too. Clean the bilge to make sure there are no smells to make the boat seem old.

Give the head and shower a good clean and add a double dose of chemicals to the holding tank. Repair any broken equipment, get the engine steam cleaned if necessary, touch up any spots of corrosion and change the oil. Make sure the engine starts immediately by charging the batteries, these are all things buyers check to see how well the boat has been maintained.

Give the galley a good clean and if you can remove the carpet, shampoo it and let it dry in the sun. Get the curtains and upholstery cleaned. Scrub the covers and Bimini top and clean or replace the side curtains if necessary. De-clutter anything that is non-standard, poorly installed or not for sale with the boat.

l yourself though! Put together a mini brochure to show buyers with photos of the boat in the water (not too many so they think the boat is older than you say), any old instruction manuals and brochures with a list of the specification and included items.

The Final Paperwork

Great you have done the deal, all you need to do now is the boring paperwork. If you ensure this is done correctly it will save any problems in the future. Type up a bill of sale including:

* price
* model and spec of boat
* registration numbers
* equipment included
* buyer and seller names and addresses
* driver’s license numbers

This will also serve as a payment receipt.

Provide a receipt if you are taking a down-payment and you could make the deposit non-refundable so you reduce time-wasters. Ask for a cashier’s or certified check for both the deposit and the balance. Agree the date for final payment and delivery/collection.

If a buyer wants a sea trial, make sure that you have an agreement that buyer will pay any costs for launching or refueling and you have non-refundable deposit in hand, also ensure you have any relevant insurance cover.

Complete the pink slip and send it to the relavent registration authority, the sooner the better as you may still be liable until you do. Don’t cancel your insurance until the boat has left your hands.

Choosing The Right Anchor For Your Boat

You’ve just bought that “new” 44 foot Albin Sundeck trawler and she’s everything you needed in a trawler. After upgrading some marine electronics, you will be prepared to do some cruising. You can’t wait to drop the hook and savor your time on the water.

But wait; gunk holing is your goal but is your anchor the right one? It was on the Banks when you bought her so it should be the right one, right? So what is the right anchor for you new boat?” I get asked that question a lot, and the response is that the kind of bottom, be it mud, grass, sand, coral or rock, will determine the right selection of anchor, as will the size of your watercraft. Some anchoring spots may also call for more than one anchor.

Wind circumstances will also be involved in how well an anchor holds; every time the wind speed doubles, the force on the boat and her anchor will increase by four times.

Sizing an anchor for your trawler reinforces, the “bigger is better” concept; you really cannot have too much anchor. If your diesel engine fails and you are floating toward an open inlet, having a suitably sized anchor ready could save you and your boat. However anchor selection also has some practical issues involved; raising an anchor by hand with no electric windlass would be strenuous and therefore requires light and effective ground tackle.

Anchors must provide resistance in the sea bed to work properly. And the anchor’s ability to work is totally dependent on its capability to penetrate the sea floor. Therefore, the selection of an appropriate sea bed for dropping anchor is more crucial than the anchor you choose. You must evaluate the sea bed bottom conditions when choosing your anchor.

Aboard my trawler the Patricia Ann, I use a 35 lb. Lewmar CQR. It routinely holds in sand and mud bottoms in our cruising area without pulling free. It sets easi

Here is a breakdown of potential options based on sea beds you may find:

Sand: Fine–grained sand is rather easy for anchors to penetrate and provides very good holding power with foreseeable results. Fluke anchors offer the best results in sand.

Mud: Mud has low shear strength, and requires an anchor design with a broad shank. This permits the anchor to penetrate deeper into mud where there is greater sheer strength. Mud bottoms may have clay just below the mud; anchors that penetrate into the clay will have even better holding power. Hinged plow anchors and CQR anchors function better in this setting.

Rock and Coral: Where you drop your anchor influences the holding power. Plow type anchors, with high structural strength to support the high point loads, normally work the best in rock or coral. A Claw, CQR or Delta work good in these situations

Shale, clay, and grassy bottoms: These bottoms are the most difficult to address; the weight of the anchor will be the primary factor in gaining penetration and holding ability. CQR and Delta anchors are found to be good due to their capability for penetrating vegetation. These conditions, however, have a high failure rate from anchors catching on roots or dragging on the surface, rather than grabbing something solid.

Here is a breakdown of the 5 styles of anchors. Cost comparisons are based upon outfitting a 40 foot power boat.

1 – Fluke Anchors
Pros: Acceptable holding power in sand. Can be had in light weight aluminum. Low priced. Holds good in sand. Can be bought in light weight aluminum alloy. Inexpensive.
Cons: Limited or no holding in rock, mud, grass, or clay bottoms.
Brands: Fortress, Danforth, Guardian
Costs: $109.00 for 40 ft boat

2 – Claw Anchors
Pros: Low cost. Sets fairly quickly in most sea bed conditions. One piece design. Roll stabilized .
Cons: Difficult to stow without rollers or chocks. Limited holding power in mud or soft sand.
Brands: Lewmar Claw, Manson Claw
Costs: $109.00 for a 40 ft. boat

3 – Non–Hinged Plow Anchors
Pros: Very strong, made from heat-treated steel. Works good in sand.
Cons: May have problems setting in mud, rock, grass or clay bottoms. Pricey
Brands: Delta, Anchorlift
Costs: $278.00 for a 40 ft. boat

4 – Non–Hinged Scoop Anchors
Pros: Roll bar for simple setting. Some claim to be fastest setting anchor on market. Sets easily in sand and mud.
Cons: More expensive
Brands: Rocna, Manson
Costs: $599.00 for a 40 ft. boat

5 – Hinged Plow Anchors
Pros: Widely used. Heavy construction.. Stows easily on an anchor roller, and sets well in most sea beds. Easily penetrates mud and grass. Good holding power.· Cons: Anchors are large and heavy. Very expensive.

Costs: $749.00 for a 40 ft. boat
